Welcome to the new season! The club reopens on Monday 6 September, which provides a great opportunity to remind yourself what those funny-shaped pieces of plastic are supposed to do.
You’ll probably have noticed that this newsletter now has a name. David Levens recalled that some years ago the club had a newsletter called The Passed Pawn. I can’t see a good reason to break with tradition, so the name has been revived.
The next issue of The Passed Pawn will not be sent out by post. Instead, it will be available only at the club or online at the club’s web site. If you would like to be notified of new issues by email, please let me know.
There was time for one last event before closing down for the summer: the club’s lightning championship. Eighteen players competed, playing in a six-round Swiss at 10 seconds per move, and the tournament was won by Ian Kingston, with a perfect 6/6 score. Full results are listed in the tournament table.
The new BCF grading list has been published. Check here for your grade (thanks to David Levens for extracting these from the list). The most improved adult is John Crawley (up 19 points); the most improved junior is Amisha Parmar (up 30 points).
The new fixture list has just arrived. By the time you read this, all of the fixtures should be posted on the web site. Printouts will also be available at the club. Potential second team members should note that the first match of the season is on Monday 13 September; the first, third and fourth teams all play their first matches on 20 September; and the fifth team kicks off on 27 September.
The county championships (Open, Major and Under 18) take place at Nomads Chess Club, Sherwood Community Centre, Mansfield Road on 25–26th September. Entry forms will be available at the club. Alternatively, contact Tony Wright (0115 917 2468).
Club members have been out and about in various tournaments recently. Balvinder Grewal played in the Specsavers Young Masters at Millfield School in Somerset, where he scored 6/10 – the best score by an unrated player.
Several club members played in the BCF Congress at Scarborough. David Levens scored 4/7 in the Seniors event; Amisha Parmar scored 4/11 in the Major Open; and Ian Harris and Balvinder Grewal scored 3/7 and 4/7 respectively in the Under 16 section.
There is one small new feature on the Web site: an RSS news link. If you know what that means, and you have the appropriate software, you can use it to keep up to date with news published on the site.
