Review

The second team’s season, expected to be merely a season of consolidation following promotion, turned out to be something more. An early loss to Bunkers kept expectations in check, but by the New Year the team had reached first place and had to start thinking seriously about promotion. Some of the first-half success was down to being able to use Gavin before he was finally tied to the first team, and it often felt that the team was changing match by match – for the Fiveways match in January I actually had to introduce most of the team to each other.

A key moment was the return match against Bunkers 1, when the team fluffed a golden opportunity to beat the weakest team fielded all season by our chief rivals for first place. After that it was clear that the main battle would be with Grantham 1 for second position. A good win against Radcliffe & Bingham 1 put us back on track, but careless narrow defeats against Ashfield 2 and Nomads 1 put the whole season in jeopardy. Nevertheless, with points in the bank from earlier in the season our destiny remained in our own hands, and a win in the crucial return match against Grantham put us within touching distance. In the final match against Long Eaton 1, needing just a draw to secure promotion, it all came together with an upset victory that gave us second place by a clear margin.
