Rules

The competition is open to every member of the club, junior or adult, in any membership category. Juniors who normally attend only the early evening session are encouraged to take part in the competition.

The results will be submitted for grading by the ECF.

Format: 5 round Swiss – everyone plays in every round. Plenty of time is available for each round, so half-point byes are not available.

Entry fee: £2, payable before, or at the start of, Round 1.

Rate of play: 30 moves in 75 minutes; then add 15 minutes each  to complete the game

Games may be played on any club night by arrangement between the two players. Play starts at 7:30 p.m.

Timetable

Games in each round must be completed by the following dates:

Round 1: 31 December 2011
Round 2: 18 February 2012
Round 3: 1 May 2012
Round 4: 1 June 2012
Round 5: 1 July 2012

The draw for each round will be made as soon as all of the games in the preceding round have been played. Pairings will be made by computer using the August 2011 ECF grading list.

Players must contact each other within three days of the draw being published in order to arrange their games.

Games not played by the scheduled dates will be considered lost by both players. If there is genuine difficulty in arranging a suitable date (particularly for players whose league matches interfere), an extension may be granted provided the controller is informed at least two weeks before the scheduled end of the round. Work or school commitments will not be accepted as valid reasons for an extension.

Results must be reported immediately to the tournament controller.

Prizes

There will be trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, as well as junior age group prizes which will be determined once entries are known. Ties will be broken by:

(1)    Sum of progressive scores; if this is level, then
(2)    Buchholz score; if this is level, then
(3)    Sum of opponents’ scores

In the unlikely event that these fail to break the tie, a play-off will be arranged.

Disputes

In the event of a dispute, the tournament controller’s decision will be final. If the tournament controller is either involved in, or has an interest in, the dispute, the matter will be referred to the club committee.
