Gunarathne family in action across the British Championships!

It was a busy 9 days for Senith, Miheli and their father at the British Chess Championships, held in Liverpool for the first time since 2008.

Senith, as previously reported, qualified for the main Championship. A tough assignment, but he performed well scoring 2.5pts out of 9, including a win against FM Dave Ledger. Senith doubled up to play the U14 Junior Championships. He started strongly but faded at the end, finishing on 3 out of 7. It was probably the case that playing both tournaments was a bit of a stretch, as tiredness caught up with him in the final rounds of both tournaments. Nevertheless it was a fantastic performance which he can be proud of.

Miheli also doubled up. In the mornings she played the U10 Junior Championships, scoring 3.5 out of 7. Then in the afternoon she took on the U1750, finishing on 2.5pts out of 6 – a slow start but she consolidated and finished with a win in the final round.

But we leave the best to last! Playing in the PM U1450, Dhamindra scored an amazing 5.5 out of 6 and was in first place! He won £260 in prize money.

Congratulations to all three. Also, special mention to Hambel Willow, who was a FIDE Arbiter for the Championship – if you watch the video of the playoff between Adams and Conquest you will see her resetting the pieces for the second game!
